The Third ‘Cloverfield’ Movie Has Been Delayed to 2018
The Cloverfield films have made a business model of sneaking up on viewers. The first movie showed up out of nowhere, a surprise production from J.J. Abrams, with a trailer that had a release date, but not even a title. History repeated itself with last year’s 10 Cloverfield Lane, which Abrams also sprung on audiences when the trailer arrived online and in theaters just months ahead of release. But it looks like things are going to be different on this third Cloverfield; you are definitely going to see it coming because it’s just been bumped back from its original release date.
TheWrap has the details. The film, which is still technically untitled and referred to as 2017 Cloverfield Movie (but for a time was called God Particle) has been delayed, pushed back from its original release date of October 27 to a new date of February 2, 2018. (I guess we’ll start calling it 2018 Cloverfield Movie for the time being.)
That puts it more in line with the previous two movies’ releases, which both came out early in their respective years, and made big critical and commercial splashes during relatively uncompetitive times for genre films. Released on the Friday before Halloween, 2017 Cloverfield Movie would have had to fight for box-office bucks with the new Saw sequel, Jigsaw, along with assorted other horror films and prestige releases.
So you have more time to anticipate this particular Cloverfield than the previous ones. But knowing J.J. Abrams’ style, I imagine there are more surprises inside this particular Mystery Box.
