Daniel Wu to Raid Tombs With Lara Croft in ‘Tomb Raider’ Reboot
That Tomb Raider reboot is chugging right along after justifying its existence by casting Walton Goggins as the villain. Obviously the agents know what they’re doing because that casting is perfect, as is Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft herself. Today, the studio announced a new addition, as Daniel Wu has officially joined the cast.
Variety brings word that the Into the Badlands star will be joining Alicia Vikander’s Lara Croft on her quest to find her father. Wu will be playing Lu Ren, a ship captain who joins Croft’s cause. The movie will focus on Croft’s very first adventure, so she’ll be far from the established raider of funerary monuments we know her as today.
I can’t personally speak to Into the Badlands’ quality, but Wu should be a good fit for Tomb Raider after holding his own in the crazily-conceived fantastical world of the AMC show in which medieval feudal society is combined with martial arts and dark magic. And Wu playing a ship captain means this movie has the potential for some exciting swashbuckling as well. Maybe I’m biased for growing up during the Pirates of the Caribbean age, but nothing improves a movie as well as some good old high seas adventure.
The Tomb Raider reboot will be directed by extremely dragon-named Roar Uthaug and is scheduled to hit theaters March 16, 2018.
