Flash big bads can be a little difficult to keep up with (hardy-har), hopping back hundreds of years in time and changing their appearance, or speeding between dimensions on a whim, but at least one of Barry Allen’s biggest rogues will make a major Season 2 return. The Reverse-Flash will officially zoom back to Central City, but in which form, and why?

Keep in mind a few spoilers for The Flash Seasons 1 and 2 from here on out, but the first year of Barry Allen’s speedy heroics saw a revelation that future foe Eobard Thawne (Matt Letscher) was the one to travel back in time kill a young Barry Allen’s mother, only to lose his powers, steal the identity of Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh), and plot a decades-long revenge.

Last we saw, the final confrontation between Barry and Wells/Thawne ended with the villain’s present-day ancestor taking his own life, subsequently reverting Thawne to his original appearance and erasing him from the timeline altogether. Season 2 has seen Cavanagh back as the real Harrison Wells (albeit from Earth-2), while Entertainment Weekly reports that Letscher will reprise his role in 2016 as the full-fledged Reverse-Flash.

Assuming you’re still following all of this, it isn’t clear exactly how Letscher’s Eobard Thawne would return, perhaps identically as the future-speedster of Earth-2’s timeline, though executive producer Todd Helbing offered some preview of the season’s eleventh hour, appropriately titled “The Reverse-Flash Returns”:

His impossible return to Central City puts a member of the S.T.A.R. Labs team in unexpected danger, forcing Barry to make a life-changing decision.

Fair enough! Granted, Thawne isn’t the only surprise return we’ll face in 2016 [SPOILERS], what might the Reverse-Flash bring to the table, given how little we know of current big bad Zoom? Check out our first footage of The Flash’s 2016 return “Potential Energy” below, and stay tuned for the latest.
