Following months of rumors, 20th Century Fox surprised X-Men fans twice-over with the announcement of both FX’s Legion, and FOX’s Hellfire adaptation of the famously sinister club. We’ve seen Legion making progress, but Hellfire may have cooled, now that executive producers Evan Katz and Manny Coto have jumped ship to FOX’s 24: Legacy, among others.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, this morning’s announcement of a new 24 series effectively took Katz and Coto off of Hellfire altogether, with Star Trek Beyond scribes Patrick McKay and JD Payne also abandoning the project. Hellfire will search for a new writer, with FOX reportedly committed to getting the project right, though that may push a formal pilot past the current development season, into 2017 at the earliest.

According to initial reports, Hellfire would center on the same Hellfire Club seen in X-Men First Class, described as following “a young special agent who learns that a power-hungry woman with extraordinary abilities is working with a clandestine society of millionaires — known as ‘The Hellfire Club’ — to take over the world.”

We’ll likely hear more of Legion at least over the weekend, as FX presents at the TCA press tour, but will Hellfire fare better with a slower-burn? Which X-drama seems like a better fit for the universe?
