Even the most passionate critics of 'Man of Steel' tend to agree that Hans Zimmer's bombastic and emotional score is a highlight of the film, so it wasn't surprising at all when he was invited back to score 'Batman vs. Superman.' What is surprising is how he's choosing to go about it. In keeping with the confrontational aspect of the film, Zimmer will provide all of Superman's music and another composer will provide the score for the Caped Crusader.

Now that's one cool idea.

Zimmer talks about this decision in part of a longer interview over at Comic Book Resources, revealing that the Batman music will be written by Junkie XL (aka Tom Holkenborg), who has been collaborating with Zimmer for years. And Junkie XL has bonafide geek cred, too: he recently finished scoring George Miller's 'Mad Max: Fury Road.' Not to mention the fact that he's already had contact with director Zack Snyder, who produced '300: Rise of an Empire,' which (you guessed it) was scored by Junkie XL.

What's kind of funny about this whole thing is that Zimmer claims this decision came about when he decided he didn't want to disrespect the score he and James Newton Howard had written for Batman during Christopher Nolan's 'Dark Knight' trilogy:

I have agonized over it. I agonized over it, so much so that finally, I went, I don’t want to betray what Chris, James Newton Howard and I did. And so I asked Zack [Snyder] if it would be OK if I called a friend in. And I'm going to be working with Junkie XL, who really is a great friend. He just finished the Mad Max score. I said to him, 'You take care of Batman. I'll do the other guy.' And Zack loved that idea. It's a way out.

This feels like an area where DC and Warner Bros. can, for lack of a better phrase, kick Marvel Studios' ass. None of the Avengers characters have dynamic or interesting scores, so when they all meet up, the change for iconic themes to come into play and bounce off each other is completely lost. If every member of the Justice League gets a great piece of theme music, imagine how cool is will be to here all of those familiar scores intermingle during an epic action scene.

'Batman vs. Superman' will open on March 25, 2016.
