In October of 2014 at a Marvel event in Los Angeles, Kevin Feige and Marvel announced a November 2, 2018 for Inhumans, their latest superhero team. But a funny thing happens when you announce a movie’s release date four years in advance? Things change and life, uh, finds a way as Dr. Ian Malcolm would say. And so, Marvel has now pushed back Inhumans to an as-yet-undecided date to get out of the way of another Disney blockbuster: Indiana Jones 5.

Shortly after that Marvel event in 2014, Inhumans was shifted to June 12, 2019. Back then a fifth Indiana Jones movie was just a silly rumor, but flash-forward two years and Indy’s new movie has been dated for June 19, 2019. It is not exactly Disney’s style to have two movies that big open back-to-back, so Mssrs. Spielberg and Ford will get to keep their date while Marvel takes their relatively unknown superhero project back to the drawing board. Explains Feige to Collider:

Since we made our initial phase three announcement, we added Spider-Man, which was a big joyous coup for us. We added Ant-Man and the Wasp, which was a big fun continuation of that story for us. Walt Disney Company has announced an Indiana Jones film for right around that same time. So I think it will shuffle off the current date that it’s on right now. How far down it shuffles, I’m not sure yet.

Feige was pressed as to if Inhumans would ever happen, especially given all that is happening with Inhumans on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and persistent rumors that Marvel had canceled the film, to which he replied emphatically, “No, It’s a question of when.” Currently the film has a script written by Joe Robert Cole.

Okay, so for those who’ve forgotten, who are the Inhumans? These characters have a weirder and more complicated history than most Marvel characters, but the in-a-nutshell answer is that they’re humans who were transformed by the alien race known as the Kree for use as potential weapons against their ongoing foes, the Skrulls. When the dust settled, the resulting superpowered humans went on to form their own society, under the leadership of a guy named Black Bolt. Other major members of the Inhumans include Medusa, Karnak, Gorgon, Triton, Crystal, Maximus the Mad, and Lockjaw.

Back in 2014 Vin Diesel took to social media and teased his involvement an Inhumans project, because he is Vin Diesel and that’s what he does. This led many to believe that Diesel was talking to Marvel about playing Black Bolt in the film, but given that the film is still now over three years away, there’s been no confirmation on cast.

The Inhumans movie is still coming, but you’re likely going to have to wait until at least 2020 until you see it, if not later. Here’s what the current schedule of the Marvel Cinematic Universe looks like:

Doctor Strange – November 4, 2016
