Mysterio and Kraven Will Get Their Own ‘Spider-Man’ Spinoffs at Sony
Before we even get to see the debut of Sony’s new Peter Parker, the studio is fast at work planning the next Spider-Man spinoffs. On top of the Tom Hardy-led Venom spinoff and Gina Prince-Bythwood Black Cat and Silver Sable project, two more Spidey villians are set for their solo movie debuts.
The Hollywood Reporter sat down for a long, in-depth chat with Sony chairman Tom Rothman. After revealing the villain of Hardy’s Venom, he spilled details on the studio’s plans for their next Spidey spinoffs. The two character names he dropped for upcoming projects were Mysterio and Kraven the Hunter. Mysterio, a.k.a. Quentin Black, was first introduced to the comics in 1964’s The Amazing Spider-Man #13. The character began as a special effects designer and stuntman in Hollywood who later used his special effects wizardry to become a supervillain and face-off with Spider-Man. Kraven the Hunter, a.k.a. Sergei Kravinoff, was exactly that – a big game hunter who sought to take down the web slinger. The character first appeared in Marvel Comics in The Amazing Spider-Man #15 in 1964.
Rothman didn’t share any additional details on either character, but it sounds like Mysterio and Kraven solo movies are next in line to expand Sony’s new Spider-Man franchise. While the studio attempted to launch a Spidey villain ensemble with the scrapped Sinister Six back with The Amazing Spider-Man, the THR piece notes that Sony aims to slowly build their new universe this time around. Following Tom Holland’s solo debut in Spider-Man: Homecoming in just a few weeks, Hardy will lead Venom on October 5, 2018, likely followed by Prince-Bythewood’s Silver & Black, which THR notes begins filming this fall. From there, we can likely expect Mysterio and Kraven movies to follow.
