Watch the Russo Brothers Break Down an ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Scene in Absurd Detail
I got to interview the Russo brothers last weekend, but it was before anyone had seen Avengers: Infinity War and they were very hesitant to say almost anything of substance about the film. Wary of spoilers, I could barely get them to acknowledge that the film even existed, much less get into specifics about the hows and whys of the making of Infinity War.
Now that the movie is actually out in theaters and millions of people have seen it, they’re a little bit more forthcoming. In this excellent video from Vanity Fair, Anthony and Joe Russo break down a scene from Infinity War in painstaking, borderline absurd detail. They talk about the types of lens they used. They talk about fill lights and key lights. They talk about all kinds of super nerdy stuff. Not comic-book nerdy stuff; filmmaking nerdy stuff. And it’s great.
The scene in question is very early in the film; from Thor’s first meeting with the Guardians of the Galaxy. If you haven’t seen Infinity War yet, there really aren’t any spoilers, at least that aren’t in the trailers for the film. So feel free to watch it and learn about emotional realism and why you shoot Chris Pratt in medium shot instead of close-up, and which techniques from filming Arrested Development they took to the shooting of Avengers. It’s all really good stuff. If the Russo brothers want to come back and talk to me again without playing coy, I’m ready.
Avengers: Infinity War is in theaters now.
