Welcome back to Screen Crush. I'm Ryan Ary and this is everything you need to know before seeing Evil Dead. Finally, Evil Dead is back, baby, with the sixth movie coming out in just a few days. So, this is a franchise that spans decades. It's a timeline that spans centuries, and it's a series with more rights issues and reccons than it has dead, but we're going to lay out the entire timeline for Evil Dead and show you how everything connects right now. The first Evil Dead came out in 1981, and it was Sam Ramy's first film. It opens with five Michigan State students on a trip to a remote cabin. There's Scott and his girlfriend Shel. Ash and his girlfriend Linda. And there's also Cheryl, Ash's sister. Inside the cabin, Scotty and Ash find the dagger of Canandor and the Natarim Deanto in the cellar. Wait, I thought it was a Necronomicon. All right, so this is the first place the continuity gets a little weird. In the movie, and in some of the later entries, it's called the Natarim Demonto, but in other entries, it's called the Necronomicon. But both are referred to as the Book of the Dead. According to Bruce Campbell, the answer lies in Army of Darkness, where it's revealed that there are three copies of the book. So, one goes by Nataram Demonto and the other goes by Necronomicon. Still, some fans argue online that they're actually the same book. My hot take is that I don't think it matters. At the end of the day, if there's a book made of human flesh and inked in blood, things are about to get bad. They also find recordings of a scholar reading the book aloud, which awakens the evil. Sensing something is stalking them, Cheryl goes out into the woods where she is attacked and assaulted by the trees themselves. After Cheryl escapes the trees, Ash tries to drive her home, but the bridge is destroyed. The group tries to resume their fun night until Cheryl morphs into a dead eye. You and I is before you. Really? What's a deadite? It is somebody who is possessed by the evil of the book. It's coined in the third movie. After a brief fight where Linda is injured, they lock Cheryl in the cellar. The next defall is Shel who is killed and dismembered by Scotty. After that, Scotty wants to leave, but Ash refuses to leave Linda. Scotty dips anyways and dies after being attacked by the woods. Next, Linda turns into a deadite. After she attacks Ash, he kills her, but can't bring himself to dismember her. And hey, this is how he gets his iconic chainsaw. After she resurrects from the grave, Ash beheads her, which still doesn't actually kill her, but at least it makes her ineffective. Meanwhile, Cheryl escapes and attacks Ash when he walks back into the house. Then, Scotty reawakens as a deadeyed and starts attacking him, too. In a lastditch effort, Ash throws a nodum demonto into the fire and Scotty and Cheryl literally come undone. Ash escapes the house, walking into the morning light. But of course, evil can never really be defeated. And what a great setup for Evil Dead 2. The Evil Dead 2 has a weird beginning. Remy didn't have the rights to the first movie, so the first seven minutes of the movie are a refilmed recap where the book is renamed Necronomicon Exmortis. And then it picks up right where it left off. Ash is possessed, but luckily he's saved by the bell. Unluckily, he's knocked out and sleeps most of the day away. When he wakes up, he's forced to shelter in the cabin for another night. Linda awakens again, and her head bites Ash, forcing him to kill her for the third time. But it's too late. His hand is now possessed from the bite and he has to cut it off. Now, remember the scholar from the last movie? Well, his daughter Annie and her research partner, Ed, found more pages of the Necronomicon. To get to the cabin, she enlists two locals, Jake and Bobby Joe, to take them via the backtrails. When they get to the cabin, they assume that Ash killed Annie's parents, and they lock him in the cellar where he is attacked by Annie's de-eyed mother, Henrietta. This causes Bobby Joe to panic, and she runs into the woods where the trees take their revenge. Annie translate more pages of the Necronomicon, revealing a prophecy. He was prophesized to have destroyed the evil. But then Ed takes the shotgun and forces them outside to look for Bobby Joe. Bad move because Ash immediately turns into a deadite. While trying to hold off Ash, Annie accidentally kills Jake. Ash is then snapped back to himself by the necklace that he gave Linda. Annie fits Ash with his iconic chainsaw hand and saw off shotgun. Then she begins the ritual. Now the ritual forces the evil into a physical form, which means we get this. And the hand that Ash cut off at the beginning of the movie, it is still running around. It kills Annie, but she finishes the ritual with her dying breath, creating this giant vortex that the monster, Ash, and his car all get pulled into. The portal spits Ash out into the middle ages surrounded by knights. And after he kills a deadite, he realized that he is a champion prophesized in the Necronomicon, which leads us to Army of Darkness, aka Evil Dead 3, or as Ramy wanted to call it, medieval dead. After killing a few more deadites, Ash is recognized as a hero by this medieval court. The court's wise men tell him that to get back to his own time, he needs the Necronomicon. But when he finds it, he has to say a particular set of words so he won't awake the army of the dead. Platu Verata Niktu. And we can definitely count on him to mess that up. He embarks on a quest for the book with evil hot on his tail. That night, he shelters in a windmill. But after breaking a mirror, a whole bunch of tiny ashes come out of the shards and terrorize him until he grows an entire life-sized ash. I'm bad ass. And you're Good Ash. They fight and eventually Good Ash buries Bad Ash alive. Ash finds the three copies of the Necronomicon, but he can't actually remember the words to safely take it. So he phones it in instead. Plateau Marada. The army of the dead rises up from the grave led by none other than resurrected bad Ash. When good Ash arrives back at the castle, he demands to be sent back home, but the wise men refuse because of the army of the dead. Ash finally decides to become the hero he's meant to be and rallies the town to fight using some 21st century technology and science to give them the upper hand. We can take these deadites. We can take them with science. After defeating evil Ash, he goes back to his own time and takes his old job at Esmart. As he's recounting the story, one final dead eye appears, which Ash kills before delivering the iconic final line. Hail to the king, baby. Then the Necronomicon went quiet for decades until Feday Alvarez's Evil Dead in 2013. Wait, is that canon? I thought that was a remake. It was a soft reboot, not a full-on remake. Alvarez confirmed on Twitter that it's a continuation and Ash makes a postredit appearance. Groovy. Plus, it really does set the tone for Evil Dead Rise and Evil Dead Burn. It deals with an entirely new cast of characters. There's Mia and her older brother, David, as well as his girlfriend, Natalie, and their mutual friends, Eric and Olivia. They're all meeting at the cabin so Mia can kick her when addiction and have a safe place to go through withdrawals. I promise not to touch this [ __ ] ever again. In the cellar, the group finds the remains of a ritual and the Natarim Demonto. Eric takes the Natar and Demonito to his room and accidentally awakens a demon called the Taker of Souls. Sensing this, Mia tries to escape, but she crashes the car and is attacked by the woods themselves. Her friends find her, but no one believes her story. She's talking about a woman in the woods, how the force attacked her. I don't know. It's just crazy withdrawal talk. After she burns herself, they try to take Mia to a hospital, but would you look at that? The bridge is gone. As soon as they get back to the cabin, Mia becomes a full out deadite. You are all going to die tonight. They lock her in the cellar, but it's too late. Olivia has now been touched by the demon, so she's the next to fall. She attacks Eric, who is forced to kill her. Realizing the book is to blame for everything, Eric tells David that once he feasts on five souls, the sky will bleed again, and the abomination will rise from hell. And they only have one option. We're going to have to kill her. Meanwhile, Mia lures Natalie into the cellar with her and attacks. Natalie escapes, but not before Mia bites her hand. And you know how it goes by now. She becomes a deadite and David has to kill her. David and Eric come up with a plan to save Mia, but Mia kills Eric in the process. David buries Mia alive, effectively cleansing her soul. No, Mia dies. Yep, but not for long. David brings her back with a makeshift defibrillator. David. Yeah. But then Eric returns as a dead. After he attacks David, he pushes Mia out of the cabin and lights the cabin on fire with Eric and himself inside. Oh, that's so sad. But at least it's over. Yeah, not quite. The taker of souls hit his soul quota. So, he is coming back. And when she's not possessed, Mia is actually a badass. She gets her own iconic chainsaw and takes him out all by herself on this [ __ ] Now, Alvarez's Evil Dead was quite a departure from the previous entries because of its super dark tone and its completely new characters. But in 2015, we return to Ash's story with the TV show Ash versus Evil Dead. Ash versus Evil Dead is set 30 years after Army of Darkness, and Ash hasn't changed a bit. He is a foul-mouthed drunk who is still working at a discount department store. High out of his mind, he reads from the Necronomicon to impress a girl. It ain't French, but uh I got a little something for you. And accidentally reawakens the evil of the book. The next day, evil takes over the town. Ash tries to cut and run, but he's stopped by his coworker Pablo. Pablo believes that Ash is the man prophesies to stand against evil, aka Elfe, which is the Spanish word for boss. Another co-orker, Kelly, gets a strange call from her father, and Pablo convinces Ash to check on her family. At her house, a dead eyee possesses her mother and kills her father. Kelly vows revenge, gluing these three together as a team. After they leave, a woman named Ruby shows up at the crime scene looking for the Necronomicon. And oh yeah, she's really good with dead eyesites. I think we'll talk here. The crew visit Pablo's uncle, a shaman they only refer to as Bruo, which roughly translates to witch. Bruho makes Ash trip balls and he realizes that he must bury the Necronomicon back at the original cabin. Bruho gets a demon Kelly but dies in the process. Pablo takes his Santa Muerte pendant which serves as a source guidance for the rest of the series. The crew goes back to the original cabin and after some dead-eyed shenanigans, they're confronted by Ruby, who's been trailing them this entire time. She says that if they want to destroy the book, they must dismantle it and not just bury it. You have to use the Kandarian dagger to deface the book. Literally rip the face off the binding. And then she convinces him to transfer ownership to her. Ash, you have carried this burden for 30 years. Isn't it time you let someone else take the load? But surprise, surprise, Ruby is a bad guy. In fact, she's the bad guy. Of course, I know what I'm doing. I wrote this book. Oh, and the tornoff face of the book, it attaches itself to Pablo. After knocking him out, Ruby appears in Ash's mind and offers him a deal. If she can take over and organize the evil forces on Earth, then Ash can live a peaceful life in Jacksonville, Florida. Meanwhile, Ruby is forcing Pablo to be a vessel for the book and throw up her children, aka young demons. After realizing he can't save Kelly and Pablo by himself, Ash makes a deal with Ruby. Normal life in Jacksonville, the three of us. The first season ends with the crew driving away from the cabin as the world literally falls apart behind them. Season 2 begins with the crew living it up in Jacksonville till they're attacked by deadeyed sent by Ruby. Your truth is over. Talk to Ruby. Turns out that her demon kids rebelled against her and are trying to resurrect their father. Bale Ash has to go back to his hometown where he earned the nickname Ashy Slashy since everybody believes that he is a regular murderer and not a deadeyed slayer. Even his own father thinks so. Still the victim with you, huh? Somebody else made you go to that cabin. They find Ruby and form a temporary alliance to stop her demon kids. My children are too powerful for me alone. Ash, I need you. After retrieving the book for Ruby, Ash's car is stolen with the Necronomicon still inside and it possesses the car, going on a killing spree. Right after Ash and his father make amends, the car strikes. Oh, Ashley, I've wasted so many years being wrong about you. The fabric of your life made me get Pablo and Ash chase down the car and have a full-on fight with it and the Necronomicon when it says, "There is another way. Cast me back to the dimension from which I came." Pablo then opens a portal to hell and tosses the book in. Everything seems to be good at first, but surprised, Bale pulls himself through the portal at the last second. After regrouping and realizing that Bale has escaped, Ruby explains, "You see, Bal jumps from person to person, wearing their skin." And they also can't send Bale back to hell without the Necronomicon. But it turns out the book isn't done with Pablo yet. A rash containing the spell starts spreading across his body. Bale kidnaps Ash. He constructs an elaborate delusion to convince Ash that he's crazy and that he must kill his delusions, aka his friends coming to save him, including Pablo. Luckily, Ash never actually falls for it and instead uses this as an opportunity. Pablo sends Bale back to hell, but dies in the process. Now distraught over Pablo, Ash forces Ruby to use the same spell from Army of Darkness to take him back to the 1980s so he can prevent himself from ever getting the book in the first place and also resurrecting Pablo in the process. The plan works, but they have something fun to deal with. a 1980s Ruby who still wants to bring her kids back. Modernday Ruby dies holding 1980s Ruby off and then Bale reveals himself. 1980s Ruby teams up with Bale, but Ash makes a bet with Bale. If he can beat Bale in a fair hand to hand fight, then Bale will be dragged back to hell. But if Ash loses, then Bale gets to take over the world. Ash manages to get him at the last minute. You immortals are so gullible. Kelly and Ash return to their own time and Pablo is resurrected. The town, who now knows that deades exist, celebrate Ash as their hero. But in the crowd, we see that Ruby is waiting. Oh, and it turns out that the Necronomicon didn't go to hell with Bale. Hey, look what I found. Season three begins with Ash taking over his father's hardware shop, Pablo running a fish and chip food truck, and Kelly working at a bar. After the Necronomicon is awoken and broadcast on the TV, the crew comes back together. Kelly also brings her new boyfriend, a member of the Knights of Sumeriia, a centuries old group devoted to stopping evil. Ash finds out that he has a teenage daughter named Brandy from Trist several years ago. I don't know how to tell you this, but Ash, he's he's uh he's your what she's trying to say is I'm your pop. And after her mom is killed by dead eyes, he takes custody of her. Meanwhile, Ruby uses the broadcast as a bat signal. After getting the book, she performs a ritual where she gives birth to a demon born from the pages of this prophecy. You may be born from the image of that idiot, Ash, but you'll be nothing like him. Ruby intends for the powers of the prophesized one to be transferred into her own demon spawn so that she can stand against the dark ones. Now, the Dark Ones have a major beef with her because she sealed them in the Deadlands centuries ago. Oh, and Ruby is also posing as a counselor at Bry's school and is using her position to drive a wedge between her and Ash. Now, the second Ash sees Ruby, he sends Kelly, her new boyfriend, and Pablo back to the cabin to get the dagger of Condor. The Necronomicon writing starts reappearing on Pablo's body, and Kelly's boyfriend says, "Those marks mean your little buddy's soul is in mortal danger." Turns out that's true because after getting the dagger, Pablo goes full deadey and attacks them. He follows Kelly all the way back to ashes and Brandy stabs him with the kandarian dagger. Pablo goes into a place between life and death where he reconnects with his uncle from the first season. He tells Pablo, "The evil within is consuming your soul and only with the strength of a bruho, you can harness its power to which leads Pablo to become a bru ho himself and come back to life again." Meanwhile, Ash discovers that a knight of Samrian named Gary opened up a rift to the Deadlands in his cellar. Kelly tries to kill Ruby on her own, but dies instead and is sent to the deadlands. At a school dance, Ruby tries to use her now fully grown demon spawn to capture Ash's power, but Ash defeats his doppelganger. Get out of my jazz. Ruby then accidentally kills Brandy, sending her to the Deadlands, and then Ash kills himself to save both her and Kelly. Ash manages to save them, but it's too late. The Dark Ones escape through the rift. After killing Ruby, the Darkwins summon Kandar the Destroyer. Ash tells the rest of the crew to evacuate and then he attaches the Kandarian dagger to a tank and kills the destroyer. He's recovered by the remaining knights of Sumeriia and wakes up in a post-apocalyptic world which actually is the deleted ending of Army of Darkness. And I'm glad they were finally able to use it somewhere in this franchise. And that is the end of Ash versus Evil Dead. And then we get Evil Dead Rise, the fifth movie and direct predecessor to Evil Dead Burn. Now Remy has been clear that all of this media exists in the same universe and that there is a loose connection. However, the Deadeyed Apocalypse is never mentioned in Evil Dead Rise. This is partially because they don't have the rights to Ash versus the Evil Dead. And to be fair, that's not new for the Evil Dead franchise. Evil Dead 2 didn't even have the rights to Evil Dead 1. The director, Lee Cronin, said that he didn't include the television lore, but also that he didn't actually reccon it. So, it probably happened, but they just don't mention it. It's weird. Evil Dead Rise is completely separate from Ash with a brand new set of characters. There's Beth, her sister Ellie, her nephew Danny, and her nieces Bridgen and Cassie. The film opens with an insane kill by a woman named Jessica before we go back in time to one day before. Ellie and her children live in a converted bank that is scheduled to be demolished in a month. After a powerful earthquake, a hole exposes the remaining vaults underneath. Danny crawls inside and finds a copy of the Nataran Demonto. And according to the director Lee Cronin, this is the third so far unused copy from Army of Darkness. Dany also finds photograph records of priest translating the book. He plays the record and hey, you know what's coming. The evil dead attacks and it possesses Ellie. She tries to fight it, telling Beth, "Don't let it take my baby." before collapsing. They try to take her to the hospital, but they can't because of damage to the building during the earthquake. And then Ellie comes back as a full out deadite. She attacks and wounds Bridget before they managed to lock her outside of the apartment, which is really unlucky for the neighbors. Dany tells Beth about the book, and they try to find an answer in the recordings, leaving Bridget to watch Cassie. But like I said earlier, Bridget was hurt. So, you know what that means? It's dead eyee time. Bridget attacks the family, but gets impaled through the head. But that's not enough. She comes back and stabs Dany, who at least actually takes her out by lighting her on fire before dying. Meanwhile, Ellie breaks into the apartment by crawling through the vents. She attacks Beth, who is saved at the last minute by Cassie. Now, at this point, every single person on the floor is a deadite. So, Cassie and Beth are forced to try the elevator. They get the door to close, but then it starts filling up with blood. Meanwhile, Ellie, Bridget, and Danny become a horrifying hybrid deadite called the Marauder. The Marauder tries to get into the elevator via the ceiling, but instead it forces it to fall to the ground. And then we get an awesome homage to The Shining. Cassie and Beth try to get their car in the parking garage, but the Marauder is still hunting them. Remember how I said the building was set to be demolished? That means there is a lot of construction equipment around, including a wood chipper. Beth tricks the Marauder into the wood chipper, ending the whole ordeal. Beth and Cassie then walk off to their happy ending, chainsaw and toe. But remember Jessica from the very beginning of the movie? Yes, that Jessica. It turns out that she lived in that apartment building. And as she's leaving, the evil attacks her. And now it's officially unleashed upon the world. And that is a recap of the entire Evil Dead franchise. The franchise takes on a lot of forms from action film to comedy to straight up spine tingling horror. And I cannot wait to see what direction they're going to take with the upcoming film Evil Dead Burn. So, what do you guys think? Is this too confusing? Too many tonal shifts? Let me know your thoughts down in the comments. And huge shout out to Brianna Mclardy who wrote this video. You can find her links below. And if it's your first time here, please subscribe.
