Few even necessarily realized that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. would transform Grant Ward into Marvel’s villainous Hive, but soon hoped for a glimpse of the character’s disgustingly squiggly comic form. Season 3’s finale finally gave us that visual, though new concept art teases some earlier, darker designs that didn’t make the cut.

Concept artist Joshua James Shaw released a few bits of artwork from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘’s hive reveal, mostly filling in the detail for animators, but at least one that teases a darker, hooded and more ominous look. The character definitely ended up a far cry from his monstrous, brown-ish comic look but a fairly impressive feat nonetheless:

Of course, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. kept Ward largely in his human guise, both for budgetary purposes, and maximizing screentime for actor Brett Dalton, though there’s every chance Season 4 brings us a little more creature-feature.

Elsewhere of Season 4, we know that the Season 3 finale timejump will introduce us to a new S.H.I.E.L.D. director, whose identity has been kept under wraps for the moment. In addition exploring Daisy’s rogue career as “Quake” and at last introducing the MCU’s take on Life Model Decoys, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 4 will also move timeslots to 10:00 P.M. on Tuesdays, allowing the Marvel drama to “go a little bit edgier, go a little darker and take some risks.”

We’ll likely learn more in the coming weeks and months, but check out the concept art, and stay tuned for more on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 4.
