Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ season 2 brought the unique benefit of standing outside any major Marvel cinematic upsets, as only ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron’ will arrive during the ABC drama’s run. And where ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ dramatically impacted the series, ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ has been confirmed to tie into the ‘Avengers’ sequel as well.

Entertainment Weekly reports official confirmation of ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’'s ‘Age of Ultron’ tie-in, though it certainly shouldn’t surprise anyone that the still-underrated ABC series would look to capitalize on its big-screen brethren. As to what specifically from ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ might tie into a power-mad supervillain AI’s efforts to destroy humanity, showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen could only offer so much:

You should expect something. The Avengers is the big tent that all the franchises play under. Obviously, we’re included in that…I don’t think any movie has the potential to impact us in the way that Captain America 2 did, but there will be connections.

The Hydra implosion of S.H.I.E.L.D. proved to be a net gain for the TV series, one that season 2 has put to considerable use and improvement through a central villain, though ‘Age of Ultron’ has been something of a curiosity by its lack of cinematic setup, at least by the extent of the first ‘Avengers.’ What do you think, though? Could Hydra’s presence in ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ season 2 provide some meaningful setup of their role in ‘Age of Ultron?’ What might we learn by tonight’s Inhuman midseason finale, “What They Become?”
