Why Netflix decided the morning of Upfronts the best time for a trailer release we’ll never know, but the ladies of GLOW are nonetheless ready to slam the competition. See for yourself, as Alison Brie leads the new Jenji Kohan wrestling dramedy with a first trailer and new photos.

Our first look at the new series is deliciously ‘80s, between the music, makeup, and robots that dispense cocaine. There’s also a rich cinematic quality to the trailer, which opens appropriately with Brie’s character wanting to play the more robustly-written dramatic (read: male) roles. Check out some new photos:

Ahead of a June 23 premiere, so reads the new GLOW synopsis:

GLOW tells the fictional story of Ruth Wilder (Brie), an out-of-work, struggling actress in 1980s Los Angeles who finds one last chance for stardom when she’s thrust into the glitter and spandex world of women’s wrestling. In addition to working with 12 Hollywood misfits, Ruth also has to compete with Debbie Eagan (Betty Gilpin) a former soap actress who left the business to have a baby, only to be sucked back into work when her picture perfect life is not what it seems. And at the wheel is Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron), a washed-up, B-movie director who now must lead this group of women on the journey to wrestling stardom.

The series also stars Betty Gilpin as Debbie Eagan, Marc Maron as Sam Sylvia, Britney Young as Carmen Wade, Ellen Wong as Jenny, Sydelle Noel as Cherry Bang, Britt Baron as Justine, Jackie Tohn as Melrose, Kimmy Gatewood as Stacey, Rebekka Johnson as Dawn, Kate Nash as Rhonda, Sunita Mani as Arthie, Kia Stevens as Tammé and Gayle Rankin as Sheila the She Wolf.

The new scripted series is inspired by the actual “Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling” league that emerged in the ‘80s. Following its 1986 debut, the original G.L.O.W. became an unscripted syndicated series, eventually transitioning to events and parties. Kohan and fellow Orange Is the New Black vet Tara Herrmann will serve as executive producer, with the prison dramedy’s Carly Mensch showrunning alongside Liz Flahive.

Check out first teaser, photos and the original G.L.O.W. below, and stay tuned for more details on Netflix’s new series.
