This isn’t exactly surprising news, since it’s been speculated for some time now that Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy might be making X-Men: Apocalypse their last outing with the franchise. Lawrence and Fassbender in particular are in increasingly high demand (and they aren’t particularly cheap, either), so it makes sense that either or both of them wouldn’t want to remain tied to the franchise for much longer. Lawrence has confirmed as much in a new interview, putting the speculation to rest once and for all.

Speaking with MTV News, Lawrence revealed (quite simply) that X-Men: Apocalypse is definitely her last outing as Mystique in the X-Men universe:

It is my last one, actually.

Simple. No explanation. But there it is. The Hunger Games is wrapping up later this year with the conclusion to Mockingjay, and Lawrence has a pretty full schedule, including a reunion with director David O. Russell for Joy. With two franchises coming to a close, it makes sense that Lawrence would want to step away from multi-film commitments for the time being.

Again, this isn’t surprising at all, especially since X-Men writer/producer Simon Kinberg recently explained how Apocalypse will provide some closure for the First Class characters, including Lawrence’s Mystique:

This movie is the completion of the first arcs of Charles, Eric, Raven, and Hank, who are essentially our main characters. They’re such young actors and young characters, so there’s a lot more story to tell. But as a first phase of their lives, there is this feeling of closure by the end of the movie.

It looks as though Kinberg and director Bryan Singer intend on making Apocalypse the end of a new trilogy, but with Fox’s plans for upcoming Deadpool and Gambit movies and their desire to build a shared X-Men universe, Apocalypse won’t be the last we see of the X-Men.

X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters on May 27, 2016.
