The story of the “Central Park Five” has oft been discussed in the last two years, and not just for their exoneration. 2019 will bring even more attention to their story, as 13TH director Ava DuVernay has booked a new Netflix limited series dramatizing the infamous 1989 case, and its decades of aftermath.

Per the streaming service’s official word, DuVernay will write and direct the five-episode series, which follows the 1989 case of Harlem teenagers Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise, who were wrongly accused and convicted of raping a woman in Central Park. Each episode will follow one of the five, with the series spanning from the 1989 incident to their 2014 exoneration, and subsequent settlement with the city.

In addressing the series, A Wrinkle in Time filmmaker DuVernay addressed the story’s modern relevance, including Donald Trump’s involvement:

I had an extraordinary experience working with Netflix on 13TH and am overjoyed to continue this exploration of the criminal justice system as a narrative project with Cindy Holland and the team there. The story of the men known as Central Park Five has riveted me for more than two decades. In their journey, we witness five innocent young men of color who were met with injustice at every turn - from coerced confessions to unjust incarceration to public calls for their execution by the man who would go on to be the President of the United States.

The as-yet-untitled series won’t debut until 2019, but stay tuned for more details in the meantime.
