‘Avengers 2′ – Get Your First Official Look at Ultron (and His Army)!
You don't have to wait for Comic-Con to get your first look at Ultron, the big 'Avengers 2' villain! Marvel has released its first look at the new big bad (and his army of Ultron clones) on the cover of Entertainment Weekly.
You can get a look at the special Comic-Con edition of next week's issue below, which promises a behind-the-scenes look at the 'Avengers 2' set, Ultron and the "crazy plot" of the new movie.
Says the magazine of that "crazy" plot:
For better or worse...Tony Stark has devised a plan that won’t require him to put on the Iron Man suit anymore, and should allow Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and the Hulk to get some much needed R&R as well. His solution is Ultron, self-aware, self-teaching, artificial intelligence designed to help assess threats, and direct Stark’s Iron Legion of drones to battle evildoers instead.
The only problem? Ultron lacks the human touch, and his superior intellect quickly determines that life on Earth would go a lot smoother if he just got rid of Public Enemy No. 1: Human beings.
The image isn't in hi-res yet, so we don't get a ton of detail, but it certainly looks faithful (on a visual level) to the Ultron in the comics. The one note in the article is that Ultron isn't just a robot, he's a program. So, he's capable of disappearing into the world wide web and reappearing in a stronger, psychical form as he upgrades.
In the “Age of Ultron” comics, Ultron had rebuilt himself so many times, he was powerful enough to take over the world. The actual story involves a number of characters not in the current ‘Avengers’ movie universe (including Spider-Man, Wolverine and She-Hulk) and Joss Whedon has said they weren't aiming for a straight adaptation of that storyline:
We’re basically taking the things from the comics for the movie that we need and can use. A lot of stuff has to fall by the wayside. But we’re crafting our own story, where his origin comes directly from The Avengers we already know about.
The comic book version of Ultron has powers that include the Encephalo-ray, which places victims into a death-like coma and allows him to manipulate their minds. Like Iron Man, he also has a number of blasts and repulsors, as well as super strength and the ability to fly at supersonic speeds. His outer shell is composed as adamantium and is virtually indestructible, but we don't think Marvel can use "adamantium" in their films (it's likely part of Fox's contract for the 'X-Men' movies), so look for a vibranium shell, which would bring The Avengers to Wakanda, home of Black Panther.
In the background, you get a brief glimpse of the Ultron clones, which we previously saw in 'Avengers 2' concept art with Quicksilver running through a crowd of robots:
'Avengers 2' opens in theaters on May 1, 2015 and will make a big appearance at 2014 Comic-Con, which will (theoretically) bring us our first public look at footage from the film.
