Most of the original Guardians of the Galaxy cast is expected to return for the sequel. In fact, most of the original Guardians of the Galaxy cast is contractually obligated to return for the sequel. But, there’s one person who won’t be returning, despite early promises that he’d be a major part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe going forward: Benicio Del Toro. The actor, who played Taneleer Tivan, aka The Collector, says he won’t be returning for Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2.

When asked if he’d return for another appearance in the planned sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy, del Toro could only muster the following: “I don’t think so. They would’ve told me, I hope.” He added that he’d certainly be interested in the prospect of taking up his character in the future, but for the moment, none of his handlers have informed him that he’ll participate in the new film.

This comes despite Zoe Saldana publicly congratulating Del Toro on his Sicario performance in October, adding, “See you on Guardians!” No, it turns out you won’t see him on Guardians.

It’s not as if Del Toro won’t be busy this year. He’s filming a major role (some say as the new villain) in Star Wars: Episode 8 and the two massive projects would be filming right around the same time. That’s not to say that Disney, who’s running the show behind both Marvel and Lucasfilm, couldn’t make it work if they wanted to, but it just doesn’t seem like there’s anything for The Collector to do in the sequel. Which all seems very odd because when Del Toro’s casting was originally announced back in 2013, we were the role was “built to be part of future Marvel films.”

Of course, the potential remains that Del Toro and Marvel are just playing coy and protecting secrets and then we have no idea what to think.

With or without The Collector, Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 opens in theaters on May 5, 2017.
