‘Captain Marvel’ Eyes ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘Inside Out’ Writers
UPDATE: Marvel has confirmed that Nicole Perlman and Meg LaFauve will co-write Captain Marvel for a November 2, 2018 release date. Original story below.
On the heels of the incredibly disappointing news that Michelle MacLaren has exited the Wonder Woman film comes some exciting news from the realm of superhero women. Although we won’t officially meet Captain Marvel for a little while, Marvel Studios is already putting talent together for her upcoming solo film. The studio has their eye on Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve, two talented female writers to hopefully pair with a talented female director (hey Marvel, I hear Michelle MacLaren isn’t busy at the moment).
The Wrap reports that Marvel and Disney are getting close to cutting a deal with Perlman and LaFauve to script their Captain Marvel film. Perlman wrote the first draft of Guardians of the Galaxy before James Gunn was brought on board, and was also an uncredited script doctor on Thor. LeFauve is one of the credited writers of the Inside Out screenplay, alongside director Pete Docter.
It’s unclear whether Marvel is also targeting female directors for their Captain Marvel solo feature, but a few suggestions, if I may: Karyn Kusama, Kimberly Peirce, Sam Taylor-Johnson and Michelle MacLaren (obviously).
It will be a while still before a screenplay is officially delivered, and likely even longer before Marvel finds and announces a director. As recently confirmed by Joss Whedon, Captain Marvel is not making her debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron (which is packed with a lot of heroes already), so it’s not certain exactly when we’ll see her first appear in the MCU.
Captain Marvel arrives in theaters on July 6, 2018.
