As Tom Hiddleston explains in this new Crimson Peak featurette, Guillermo del Toro is the “primary interpreter of gothic romance in contemporary cinema.” That’s a rather elegant and succinct way of putting it — there’s no one more suited for telling this particular ghost story than del Toro, particularly given his eye for elaborate and eerie set design.

The new featurette also features co-stars Mia Wasikowska and Jessica Chastain, and along with Hiddleston they give you a little tour of the upcoming horror film, offering clues to the “disintegrating” relationship between the three leads. Wasikowska’s character serves as the audience proxy, and we are introduced to this spooky world and the secrets of the decaying, haunted mansion through her eyes.

When her heart is stolen by a seductive stranger, a young woman is swept away to a house atop a mountain of blood-red clay: a place filled with secrets that will haunt her forever. Between desire and darkness, between mystery and madness, lies the truth behind Crimson Peak.

Crimson Peak also stars Charlie Hunnam and Jim Beaver, and will arrive in theaters on October 16.

In addition, there will be a special Crimson Peak maze at Universal Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights this October.
