If there’s one thing both TV and movie branches of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have taken to heart, it’s that no costume shall be worn without some functionality. We certainly saw that with Netflix’s Daredevil, saving Matt Murdock’s comic-costume for the very end, but should we expect the same Season 2 treatment for Punisher and Elektra?

Granted, the upcoming run of Daredevil hasn’t shown very much of either Elodie Yung’s Elektra or Jon Benthal’s Frank Castle in action, though neither generally seems the type to worry about their attire. It’s tough to say what could turn Bernthal’s particular breed of intensity toward a skull logo (that initial X-ray seemed like a clue), but new showrunners Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez assured reporters at the TCA press tour that either would take on recognizable (albeit functional) attire;

Says Petrie (h/t ComicBook.com):

I mean, the short answer is: ‘You’re gonna have to watch,’ but, we were very, very aware of it and, I think, what we were thinking – first and foremost – were two questions. One was what looks cool? How much do we love the comics and can we do that? And, then also, in terms of bringing [actress Elodie Yung] in and her martial arts training – which is so evident in what she does and who she is as a character – what would you really fight in? What would protect you? And, also Elektra isn’t just about protection. She’s a little bit of a stylist, so we threw all that into the mix.

Adds Ramirez:

Anything like a comic book costume, to us, a fun part of the challenge is making it organically feel part of the world or the tapestry of the world that makes it seem like season one. So, will people be wearing kick ass costumes in this show? Yes. Yes, everybody does – we promise! But, that said, we wanted to make it feel as organic and grounded as possible.

Meanwhile, Jon Bernthal’s description of Frank Castle didn’t make any clearer what would make the man fashion-conscious:

So much of Season 1 was about Matt dealing with this decision to be a hero [and] here comes this guy whose really not concerned with that, about being a hero. If I got one thing from the comics, as far as superpowers, his superpower is his rage. His superpower is that he’s not going to quit. He’s going to go for it no matter what. That’s as human and grounded a quality as this sort of genre can have. This is the perfect show to introduce a character like that.

Elsewhere of Daredevil Season 2, we know for sure that Rosario Dawson has been confirmed to reprise her role as Claire Temple, along with Scott Glenn’s Stick. In addition to Elodie Yung’s Elektra and Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, past Bullseye reports listed Marvel’s Mister Fear and Spider-Man villain Mysterio as potential villains for the season as well, though no confirmations have emerged. Drew Goddard remains aboard as a consultant, though the series has changed showrunners from Steven DeKnight to Marco Rodriguez and Doug Petrie.
