Nothing will turn the head of a film fan faster than news about a new Quentin Tarantino movie, so brace yourself for a little whiplash: our first look at The Hateful Eight has arrived and it showcases Kurt Russell, Samuel L. Jackson and Jennifer Jason Leigh in all of their weathered, western glory. It also showcases Russell and Jackson’s spectacular facial hair, both of which seem to be battling for dominance (Russell has the edge if you ask us).

The reveal arrives on the cover of the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly and while it only gives us a look at 37.5% of the film’s impressive ensemble, it’s certainly enough to whet our appetite for the time being. We still have first looks at Michael Madsen, Tim Roth, Bruce Dern, Walton Goggins, and Demián Bichir to enjoy at a later date.

In the film, Russell plays John “The Hangman” Ruth, a bounty hunter charged with bringing Leigh’s Daisy Domergue, a hardened and vicious criminal, to justice. However, a Colorado snowstorm forces the duo to take shelter in a small haberdashery, which is already occupied by a collection of shady characters (see: the title of the film). One of these shady characters is another bounty hunter named Major Marquis Warren, who, based on his outfit alone, already appears to be one of the ultimate Samuel L. Jackson characters.

Although the reveal doesn’t come with too many details (we’ll have to wait for EW’s full cover story for that), it does have this quote from Tarantino, who says that The Hateful Eight is his smallest movie since 1992’s Reservoir Dogs:

For me it has more of a Western Iceman Cometh kind of vibe about it. A bunch of guys in a room who can’t trust each other. That wasn’t a marching order when I sat down to write the script, but pretty quickly I realized this is kind of a nice coming-full-circle.

The Hateful Eight doesn’t have an official release date, but it’s expected to arrive in theaters later this year.
