James Gunn delighted fans by giving Howard the Duck a cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy, a move that led to a comic book prequel explaining how the wacky alien wound up hanging out in one of the Collector’s cubes. But if you were hoping that Marvel would take advantage of Gunn’s cute inclusion of the beloved character by giving him another shot on the big screen, we have some sad news for you.

It’s hardly shocking, but Gunn pal Seth Green (who voiced Howard in Guardians) says you shouldn’t get your hopes up for a new Howard the Duck movie. While speaking with IGN, Green definitively crushed any speculation that the comic book character would be given his own film — though it’s not out of the realm of possibility that we’ll see him cameo in the MCU again:

Nobody has said anything to me about that. The truth is, Gunn and I are buddies from Scooby-Doo. So, the whole Howard the Duck thing, and me getting to be that was a last minute, ‘who do I know who is in town who can do this on this date before the color print delivers?’ Nobody is thinking about a Howard the Duck movie. I love that people are running with it. But you know, it’s not going to happen. The most I can imagine, and you can’t quote me, because it’s not based in fact, but the most I can imagine is that the character could cameo at some point in some other thing. Like, we saw Cosmo already. So there is going to be some kind of rocket offshoot, right? Some kind of outer galactic mayhem. You can imagine that Howard would cameo in that. But he’ll never have a standalone movie again.

The character’s likability was heavily tarnished by the 1986 movie, which eschewed all the quirks and humor that made Howard the Duck so lovable on the page of Marvel comics, and sort of transformed him into a black sheep in the Marvel family. He’s become so closely identified with that laughably terrible film that it’s highly unlikely that Marvel would attempt to give him another shot — but a One-Shot short on a Blu-ray? That’s possible, but it’s probably as close as we’ll get.
