James Gunn is currently filming massive superhero movie Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2, which is probably the worst possible time to ask a director if he wants to come back and start filming another massive superhero movie. While rewarding, making movies on this scale is an exhausting task. It’s like asking someone in the middle of running a marathon if they’re ready to run another marathon. Let’s just get through this marathon first. But, as Gunn was taking part in a Q&A with fans on Facebook, someone naturally asked if he’s going to return to direct Guardians of the Galaxy 3, and Gunn was honest that while Marvel wants him to return, he’s not so sure he wants to.

Gunn said:

I’m not sure what I’m going to do after this. Marvel has talked to me about continuing on. I’m not sure if that’s what I want to do or if that’s not what I want to do […] Right now I really am just concerned with doing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

It’s not surprising that Marvel would want to get Gunn to sign a contract to complete the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, and equally not surprising that Gunn wants to take some time to make that decision. Both Joss Whedon and Jon Favreau left the Marvel Cinematic Universe after two films, both citing exhaustion. The Russo Brothers will have directed the most Marvel movies after Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, but they have the benefit of being a directing duo who can split tasks.

Gunn would be one of the harder directors to replace in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, if only because so much of Guardians of the Galaxy came from his particular style. It’s the one Marvel movie that feels at least somewhat separate from the so-called Marvel style. But, if Marvel was able to cut ties with Edgar Wright on a movie that he developed for about seven years, they’d probably find a way to survive if Gunn decided he didn’t want to return.

Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 stars newcomers Kurt Russell, Elizabeth Debicki and Chris Sullivan who join returning cast members Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan, Michael Rooker, Sean Gunn, Glenn Close and Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket.

Set to the all-new sonic backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” continues the team’s adventures as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s true parentage.

Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 opens in theaters on May 5, 2017.
