Netflix Introduces the Flixies, a Competition For Streaming Movies and Shows

Are there really any movie fans out there who don't have a Netflix account at this point? That must be what Netflix was thinking when they first brainstormed the Flixies, a competition where users of the immeasurably popular streaming service can vote for their favorites in a series of categories. However, there are no "Best Actor" or "Best Picture" categories here -- the Flixies are all about celebrating the shows and movies that match your specific Netflix habits.

The categories are, for the most part, not divided up by the usual criteria and rather by the circumstances under which you'd watch something. For example, the "Best Commute SHRTNR" award asks you which of the nominees is best to watch while stuck on a bus or a plane. The "Best Tantrum Tamer" award asks parents to choose the show or movie that will best distract their noisy child. The "Best Hangover Cure" is pretty self explanatory. There are also a few more traditional awards, like "Best Guilty Pleasure."

Netflix doesn't seem to be taking the Flixies too seriously, so neither should you. If anything, this is just a fun way to see what is the most popular on Netflix (and will allow Netflix to brand the winners on their site, of course).
