Just as Tom Holland’s new Spider-Man was getting cozy in the MCU last year, Sony announced plans for their new cinematic universe, one that would be launched by the upcoming Venom and feature Spidey characters. It’s been a back-and-forth of confusion whether Marvel’s web-slinger would ever crossover with Sony’s extended universe, but it was largely assumed that as long as the MCU had its hands on their new Spidey, we wouldn’t see Holland’s superhero in the Sony spinoffs. Now a new rumor has popped up suggesting Spider-Man will appear in Venom after all.

The new film stars Tom Hardy as alien symbiote Venom a.k.a. Eddie Brock. But if Hardy in motion-capture alongside Michelle Williams and Jenny Slate isn’t enough to pique your interest, Venom may also feature Holland. During a new episode of Collider Movie Talk (h/t ComicBook.com), guest Jon Schnepp stopped by and claimed that Holland’s Spidey will appear in the Ruben Fleischer movie. Schnepp says Peter Parker will show up, but guesses it could be as minor as a cameo. But remember, this is just a rumor.

While it may sound normal for Spider-Man to appear in a movie about a Spider-Man villain, the issue comes down to who owns the rights to what. Sony still holds the rights to Spider-Man characters, and with Holland introduced into the MCU, it would make sense for the studios to keep their franchises separate. Marvel’s Kevin Feige previously confirmed that Venom would not be connected to the MCU, but then Amy Pascal confirmed the opposite (while sitting next to Feige), saying Venom and its follow-up, Silver & Black, would exist in the same universe as Homecoming with potential for crossovers. And then the two walked back those latter comments saying they all co-exist, as in, they share the same comic book universe. Mhm, okay.

It’s hard to know what will happen with the future of Sony’s new Spidey universe and whether Peter Parker will have a role in it, largely because the fate of that franchise rests on the performance of Venom. If that movie bombs, you can forget it; but if it does well and the spinoffs continue, maybe we will see Spidey facing off with the alien symbiote in years to come, forcing us all to choose which Team Tom we’ll be on (don’t make me choose!). Until then, prepare to decipher the dialogue of the always indecipherable Tom Hardy when Venom hits theaters October 5.
