‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Sets Powers Boothe to Reprise ‘Avengers’ Role
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has increasingly weaved its own threads against the larger backdrop of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but its latest Season 3 addition brings with it a major Avengers tie. Powers Boothe will lend his particular brand of menace to a recurring Agents role this season, fleshing out his mysterious figure from the 2012 film.
Per Marvel, Deadwood and Sin City alum Boothe will play the role of “Gideon Malick, a notorious man whose loyalties remain a mystery.” Boothe appeared as a member of the shadowy “World Security Council” in the first Avengers film (though curiously not The Winter Soldier), while we’ve confirmed with Marvel that his Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. appearance will indeed represent the same character.
Says Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb of the role:
Gideon is incredibly menacing and in him we have a character that even the stone-cold Grant Ward would fear. Only someone of Powers’ caliber could deliver the type of ominous and powerful performance we needed.
Thus far, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3 has added Constance Zimmer as a new foil for Coulson, and Matthew Willig as the monstrous Lash. The series will presumably also help build up to Captain America: Civil War, while installing its own version of Marvel’s Secret Warriors, and setting up a Marvel’s Most Wanted spinoff for Hunter and Bobbi.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will return this coming Tuesday with “Devils You Know,” but what should we make of Powers Boothe reprising his mystery role from The Avengers? Whose side might he be on?
