Marvel surprised everyone by taking Daredevil outcry for a Punisher appearance seriously enough to cast Jon Bernthal, but how much Frank Castle can we expect on Hell’s Kitchen streets next year? A new report suggests that not only will Matt Murdock tangle with The Punisher, the skull-emblazoned vigilante might actually prove Daredevil Season 2's main big bad.

Take this one with a few grains of salt for the moment, though Nerdist claims that elevated co-showrunner Marco Ramirez has tellingly been referring to Daredevil Season 2 as “Daredevil vs. the Punisher.” We might interpret that any number of ways, with no guarantee the character appears in as regular a role as Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin in Season 1, though it’s at least an interesting idea to consider.

In particular, Nerdist points to the potential of comic arc Daredevil vs. Punisher: Means and Ends as a guidepost, though again, anything else about The Punisher’s role and significance to Season 2 ranks as pure speculation.

Thus far of Daredevil Season 2, we know that Rosario Dawson has been confirmed to reprise her role as Claire Temple, while Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez will take over showrunning duties from Spartacus vet Steven S. DeKnight, with Drew Goddard remaining onboard as a consultant. Recent audition tapes seemingly confirmed that Elektra would appear in the second season, while recent Jason Statham / Bullseye reports also listed Marvel’s Mister Fear and Spider-Man villain Mysterio as potential villains.

We’ll hear more major Daredevil Season 2 casting before long, but could Punisher really be our full big bad? How big a role might the incarcerated Wilson Fisk play, considering such other lingering threads as The Hand, or Madame Gao?
