‘Game of Thrones’ Will Film Multiple Season 8 Endings to Throw Off Leaks
Game of Thrones producers knew by Season 7 that filming details would inevitably leak out; to which they posed that certain scenes were staged for exactly that purpose. Few were necessarily fooled, but Season 8 may go the extra mile to film several endings to the Song of Ice and Fire saga.
Production on the eighth and final season won’t begin until October (scripts are at least finished), but HBO boss Casey Bloys nonetheless suggested at a Moravian College appearance (h/t UPROXX) that producers were already hard at work obscuring the ending. According to him, showrunners will film several endings to the final season; a common practice that prevents any leaks (or hacks) from confirming spoilers:
I know in Game of Thrones, the ending, they’re going to shoot multiple versions so that nobody really know what happens. You have to do that on a long show. Because when you’re shooting something, people know. So they’re going to shoot multiple versions so that there’s no real definitive answer until the end.
And where Seasons 6 and 7 have largely charted their own (ultra-speedy) course beyond George R.R. Martin’s published Song of Ice and Fire novels, we learned last year that a final book spoiler from Martin was reserved until the very end. Martin has yet to set a release date for sixth novel Winds of Winter, let alone the seventh and final Dream of Spring, so there’s no telling when he’ll have his final say.
No doubt Season 8 production will bring plenty of other on-set details, but will Game of Thrones manage to surprise us with its allegedly-bittersweet ending?
