We were fortunate enough to be on hand at Comic-Con 2015 to catch Marvel’s animated Guardians of the Galaxy premiere, but now it seems the Disney XD series will fill in backstory even the movie skipped over. See Star-Lord and Yondu’s first meeting in our first full clip from the new Guardians series!

Entertainment Tonight debuted a new clip from the Guardians of the Galaxy “Origins” preview, a series of shorts the build up to the new series debut in August and September. And while not necessarily in exact canon with the breakout film, the clip picks up with Yondu and his ravagers first abducting Peter as a boy, a scene the movie understandably skipped past.

The spirit and continuity are all largely there, between Peter ending up spaced, Yondu referencing his crew wanting to eat the hapless Terran, and a universal translator that enables Peter to interact with any aliens he encounters. Both the above short, and its predecessor will make their Disney XD debut on August 1, though you can also pay for an earlier sneak peek on iTunes.

Premiering through August and September, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy features Will Friedle as Star-Lord, David Sobolov as Drax, Vanessa Marshall as Gamora, Kevin Michael Richardson as Groot and Trevor Devall as Rocket Raccoon, and James Arnold Taylor as both Yondu and Cosmo. So reads the full synopsis:

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy follows the newly-formed team who finds a strange artifact keyed only to the DNA of Peter Quill. Upon opening it, Quill unleashes a treasure map leading to a powerful weapon known as the Cosmic Seed which is capable of giving birth to the next universe. It’s up to the Guardians to find, protect and ultimately destroy the Cosmic Seed in order to keep it out of the hands of those who would abuse its power, from galactic big boss Thanos, to the conniving brothers the Collector and the Grandmaster, to a resurrected Ronan, to the ultimate trickster, Loki, in order to save the universe.

You can check out the first clip above, as well as the teaser below, and stay tuned for more on Guardians of the Galaxy’s animated series before the September premiere!
