Among the many 2014 HBO premieres, we're increasingly excited for Cary Fukunaga's dark Woody Harrelson-Matthew McConaughey drama, 'True Detective,' which today offers an orgy of evidence to its quality. Along with a brand-new trailer that debuted with last night's 'Boardwalk Empire,' HBO offers up character profiles on either lead, a creepily ominous new poster, and even a scene from 'True Detective' to come.

We'd be hard pressed to put into words the unsettling vibe portrayed by the latest looks at 'True Detective,' other than to say that the surreal tone reminds us a bit of 'No Country for Old Men' in its voiceover narration. The accompanying poster bears the foreboding tagline "Man is the Cruelest Animal," While subsequent character featurettes offer a bit of insight into the past and present incarnations of Harrelson and McConaughey's characters.

Last but not least, let's not forget about 'Boardwalk Empire''s Shea Whigham, changing things up as a revival preacher with some equally horrifying hair in the first official clip from the January 12 premiere. Meanwhile, for those unaware, ‘True Detective’ follows investigators Rust Cohle (McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Harrelson), whose lives intertwine during a 17-year hunt for a Louisiana serial killer. Their investigation of a gruesome 1995 murder cuts through testimony from the detectives in 2012, after the case re-opens. The eight-episode series also stars Kevin Dunn (‘Veep‘), Michelle Monaghan (‘Open‘), Alexandra Daddario (‘Percy Jackson‘) and Elizabeth Reaser (‘Twilight‘).

We've included all the most recent trailers, posters and clips below, so take a look at 'True Detective' in all its unsettling glory, and tell us in the comments if you'll check out the January 12 premiere!
