Did Joss Whedon’s ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ TV Series Kill ABC’s ‘Weird Desk?’
A week or so ago, we were surprised to hear that ABC had picked up to series a sci-fi procedural named 'Weird Desk' for summer 2013, one who's premise seemed awfully familiar to fans of such investigative series as 'Fringe' and 'The X-Files.' Well, it seems we weren't the only ones to find the presence a little too similar, as ABC has decided to shelve the project for now. However, it wasn't the other series that felt too similar, but rather ABC's upcoming Joss Whedon-helmed 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' TV series!
As quickly as ABC's 'Weird Desk' had been announced for a 13-episode season in summer 2013, the network has decided to shelve the project for now. According the Deadline, the project faced difficulties in beginning production for a summer premiere without escalating costs, an undesirable prospect for a summer series.
More than that, Marvel and ABC itself were rumored to have concerns 'Weird Desk's premise of investigating the paranormal might land too close to its own forthcoming 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' TV series, despite the obvious brand recognition. Written by ‘Stargate’s' Carl Binder and ‘The Librarian’s' David Titcher, ‘Weird Desk' followed the stubborn, yet brilliant Morgan and his special forces partner Rosetta, two members of a top-secret organization that investigates the paranormal, supernatural and occasionally extra-terrestrial.
What do you think? Was ABC right to pull the series so not to detract from the 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' TV series? Tell us which you'd rather watch in the comments!
