The Sense8 Christmas special definitely served as an effective refresher in time for Season 2's premiere, though May will mark nearly two years since the series first debuted. As such, cast options for future seasons apparently lapsed months ago, though Netflix has now taken to renewing contracts, likely signaling a Season 3 renewal.

Deadline reports that Netflix has formally begun locking down the Sense8 cast for a potential third season, specifically that “about half of the eight leads have closed deals, and the rest are in negotiations. Insiders are optimistic all would come back.” The options would extend until June, affording ample time for Netflix to decide on/finalize a renewal, which seems likely, given the effort involved.

Perhaps worth noting, Naveen Andrews used his contract release to secure a role in CBS drama pilot Instinct, which if taken to series would limit his availability for future Sense8 seasons.

Set for a May 5 premiere, so reads the official Season 2 synopsis:

Picking up where season one left off, Capheus, Kala, Lito, Nomi, Riley, Sun, Will and Wolfgang come together both physically and mentally, plunged into the middle of each other’s tragedies and triumphs. On the run from Whispers, and forced to question their very identity, it’s a matter of survival as the Sensates must find a way to live with, understand and protect one another against all odds.

Elsewhere, we know that the next run will continue the departure of star Aml Ameen, as well as Wachowski sibling Lilly, leaving Lana in a solo directing position. Lilly sat out the season to “focus on her well-being” after coming out as transgender, and may return for a potential third season.

For those unfamiliar, Sense8 follows eight characters around the world who find themselves mentally and emotionally linked in the aftermath of a mysterious death. Its cast includes Daryl Hannah, LOST star Naveen Andrews, Brian J. Smith (Stargate: Universe), Tuppence Middleton (Jupiter Ascending), Jamie Clayton, Freema Agyeman (Doctor Who), Indian actress Tena Desae, South Korean actress Doona Bae, German actor Max Riemelt, Mexican actors Alfonso Herrera and Erendira Ibarra, as well as Miguel Silvestre and Terrence Mann.

We’ll learn more in the next few weeks (including from a Season 2 trailer), but check out the photos below, and stay tuned for the latest on Sense8 in the meantime.
