Our long national nightmare will abate this week, as both The Flash and Arrow return to the airwaves with new seasons. We’ve seen a few snippets from Barry Allen’s next big bad, but big is the name of the game in our first full clip from the Season 2 premiere, as “Flash Day” ends up interrupted by DC’s Atom Smasher.

Our latest look at “The Man Who Saved Central City” sees original Flash series star Vito D’Ambrosio reprising his role as Mayor Anthony Bellows to honor Central City’s hero, even if the man himself seems reluctant to attend the ceremony. With good reason it seems, as Adam “Edge” Copeland quickly makes his Atom-Smashing presence known, as well with the comic tease below:

So reads the CW’s premiere synopsis of “The Man Who Saved Central City”:

BARRY DECIDES HE NEEDS TO PROTECT THE CITY ON HIS OWN

Picking up months after the Singularity attacked Central City, Barry (Grant Gustin) is still struggling to forgive himself for Eddie’s death. Concerned about putting his friends in danger, Barry has pushed everyone away and has chosen to protect the city on his own. When a meta-human named Atom Smasher (guest star Adam Copeland) attacks the city, Iris (Candice Patton) tells Barry that he needs to let his friends help him protect the citizens of Central City. Meanwhile, Cisco (Carlos Valdes) helps Joe (Jesse L. Martin) with his Meta Task Force.

Thus far, we know of The Flash Season 2 that The Messengers alum Shantel VanSanten will guest as DC character and Barry’s new love interest Patty Spivot, joining Masters of Sex alum Teddy Sears as Golden Age speedster Jay Garrick, Tony Todd as the voice of big bad Zoom, Insurgent star Keiynan Lonsdale as Wally West, Adam “Edge” Copeland’s Atom Smasher, Violett Beane as Jesse Quick and Demore Barnes as Firestorm villain Tokamak. We’ll also see the returns of Gorilla Grodd, Captain Cold and Golden Glider (including their father), and likely others, while both Barry (and Jay!) have some spiffy new duds.
