In what is seemingly like an increasingly common occurrence these days, Netflix has canceled one of its buzziest shows after just a few seasons. The OA will not return for a third run on the streaming service.

Here is the statement on the news provided by Netflix to Variety:

‘We are incredibly proud of the 16 mesmerizing chapters of ‘The OA,’ and are grateful to Brit and Zal for sharing their audacious vision and for realizing it through their incredible artistry,’ said Cindy Holland, vice president of original content for Netflix. ‘We look forward to working with them again in the future, in this and perhaps many other dimensions.’

The OA debuted on Netflix in December 2016. Created by star Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, it followed Marling’s title character, a woman who vanished for years, and returned under extremely mysterious circumstances. The second season (or Part II) premiered earlier in 2019. The show has gotten consistently strong reviews and plenty of internet buzz, but it’s never broken out of the pack to become a signature Netflix series. (In fairness, Netflix has so many shows it’s almost impossible on average for any of them to break out. Sometimes, it almost seems like Netflix’s biggest competitor is itself.)

Still, cancelation isn’t what it used to be in television. Shows dropped by one network or streamer often find a new home elsewhere. Another critically acclaimed but canceled Netflix series, One Day at a Time, recently relocated to Pop TV. So if fans make a big enough noise, The OA could still make a thematically-appropriate return on another online portal.
