Barry Levinson’s 1997 Wag the Dog has gotten plenty of shout-outs lately, with one political calamity after another distracting from the last, and HBO might capitalize on its relationship with the director. As such, Levinson is bringing back his film as a new TV series tailor-made for the social media and “fake news” age.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that HBO and Levinson are developing a half-hour comedy version of the political satire film, which itself followed Robert De Niro’s political strategist character hiring a Hollywood producer (Dustin Hoffman) to distract from a Presidential sex scandal with a made-up war. Here’s how HBO describes the new Wag the Dog:

An ode to the classic film, but moving the weapons of mass distraction beyond politics and into business, entertainment and, yes, nonprofits. In the 21st century with the tools of social media at their hands, nothing is off limits to a small group of operators when it comes to manufacturing reality. Fake news is so yesterday.

Writer Rajiv Joseph will pen the script, executive producing with Levinson, Tom Fontana, Jason Sosnoff and De Niro himself, alongside Hillary Clinton ally David Brock consulting. Levinson previously helmed HBO’s The Brink, which coasted by to a Season 2 renewal at first, but ended up canceled shortly thereafter.
