It was Daredevil star Charlie Cox who first let slip that Marvel Netflix teamup The Defenders would start shooting before 2016's end, throwing into question Daredevil Season 3, and now we can consider it official. Not only will Daredevil showrunners Marco Ramirez and Doug Petrie helm The Defenders, but Drew Goddard will take an active position as executive producer.

Per Marvel’s own announcement, the creative duo behind Season 2 of Marvel’s small-screen Man Without Fear will step up as showrunners to the four-way teamup series, bringing together Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. Having previously stepped down from Daredevil, Goddard also joins The Defenders as executive producer.

Says Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb:

We’re incredibly excited to be able to bring our four street level heroes together in an epic tale woven by Doug and Marco whose work on ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ speaks for itself. They write and produce not only great action and adventure, but also the heart and touch of humor that’s makes us Marvel. With the inclusion of Drew Goddard, we’ve got a team that’s as formidable as the Defenders themselves.

Adds Petrie and Ramirez:

This is the big one. Four amazing casts, four amazing series, now all in one amazing story. We are thrilled at the opportunity to deliver the show that both we and the fans have been waiting for.

That said, we don’t know when exactly to expect the series (should Netflix keep to its two-a-year model, sometime in the second half of 2017, after Iron Fist), nor if a third season of Daredevil would potentially follow (like Season 2 of Jessica Jones), but are Petrie and Ramirez up to the task? What should we expect from the major teamup event?
