Just a few months after unveiling a Squirrel-centric character roster, Marvel’s New Warriors series has officially cast its six lead roles — and yes, they’ve found their Squirrel Girl.

According to THR, Milana Vayntrub nabbed the highly-coveted role in the ensemble series following an “extensive casting search,” during which Mae Whitman and Stranger Things star Shannon Purser (who personally lobbied for the part) were also considered for Squirrel Girl. Vayntrub, best known to audiences for her recurring role on the acclaimed NBC series This Is Us, ultimately nabbed the part of the Squirrel-y fan-favorite hero. Derek Theler, who previously starred in the Freeform series Baby Daddy, has been cast as Craig Hollis, aka Mister Immortal.

The 10-episode series, which follows young heroes with “powers and abilities on the opposite end of the spectrum of The Avengers,” has also lined up Jeremy Tardy (Dear White People) as Dwayne Taylor, aka Night Thrasher; Calum Worthy (Austin & Ally) as Robbie Baldwin, aka Speedball; Matthew Moy (2 Broke Girls) as Zack Smith, aka Microbe; and Kate Comer (The Comeback) as Deborah Fields, aka Debrii.

Back in April, USA Today revealed the character lineup and details, including this description of Squirrel Girl:

Squirrel Girl is the spunky fangirl and ‘wonderful heart of the show’ with acrobat skills, superhuman strength and a cool squirrel tail, Biegel says. (She can also talk to critters including her sidekick, Tippy Toe.) ‘She is openly hopeful and earnest and sweet and optimistic, but smart and very determined that she can make a difference, too. She knows she’s great and if you’re not going to get on board with her, she’ll leave you in the dust.’

New Warriors is expected to premiere on Freeform in 2018. The network is also developing a series based on Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger.
